A new release of SocialEngine has been released. This version promises a boost in speed of approximately 60% for your SocialEngine powered social network. Most of these speed is due to a gzip performance change.

There are a couple of other minor changes as well including an improvement to translation performance (you can now translate using CSV files or PHP) as well as some bug fixes.

For those considering using SocialEngine, you might want to read the comments on our SocialEngine Review first and on the blog post below. It sounds like customers aren’t too happy with the company / products lately, so keep that under consideration.

If you currently use the system and are happy with it, we’d love to hear your thoughts. Thanks.

SocialEngine’s software is decent; it provides very basic social network functionality for a fair price. The problem is A) a complete lack of technical support and customer service, and B) reliance on 3rd party developers for literally ANY customization to your site.

SocialEngine gives you 30 days of “free support” with the purchase of a license. Their support is 100% web-based (no phone support provided), INCREDIBLY SLOW, and in most cases provides no resolution beyond “you need to hire a developer”. And if you’ve taken their advice and hired a 3rd party developer, forget about any support from the Company.

I suppose if you are a developer with lots of MYSQL and PHP experience, you’ll do pretty well with this product (although you could probably build it yourself and save the hassle); but if you think you’ll need any support at all DO NOT BUY SOCIALENGINE. It is a complete DISASTER.
