I agree with the modules, plugins, components point - This can be very confusing for sure.

I'm nearly done putting a site up in Joomla for a small company and to be honest I wish they weren't so gung-ho on Joomla. If I had known what I know now I would have either just done a simple custom CMS or set up wordpress for them.
I find it very strange how the menu / article / component / module parts criss cross, yet have slightly different functionality. Doing simple things, like creating a contact page, seem too obfuscated to me. Sure its simple, but its not intuitive. And this client wants certain features on the contact page that involve javascript. Can't turn off stripping of certain html elements from components and modules like you can in articles?
Also, why have modules, plugins and components as separate entities? Maybe its just me, but I am not enjoying working in Joomla. Its kludgy, buggy (I'm using latest 1.6) and it does certain things that restrict templating.

I've known Joomla! for years since 2006, by the time I was looking for some CMS that can build community, forums, post article, doing survey ect. and Joomla! turned out to be a very good option.

As time went by all these years, I should say I really love Joomla, it's so powerful that although it has too many "error" happenings when incorporate with com,plg or mod, you can easily change for other options, for the community for developping is quite a boost in open source field.

Getting to know Joomla is fun while frustrating experience, you shall have to fail many times, ask and learn much before you get a site up and running.

See the problem, for new users or ppl with less tech background, I think Joomla might not be the right CMS to do. Joomla on my part, is for the Geeks and web developpers, and fans --- these ppl dont care how to use the sites, but how to build a site and fix bugs!

Probably half of my work is taking clients sites that were originally built in Joomla and re-building them on another platform.

A lot of boutique web design firms and amateur web designers like it because you can set up a fairly attractive client site and offer them a "CMS" which makes them happy but the fact is, Joomla is just too difficult for the clients to understand.

I see all the time ads asking for Joomla HELP!!! where the developer who started their site just left it and the client wants things customized or tailored to their specific business needs.

Personally I love Joomla...re-designing Joomla sites on a different platform has made me a ton of money.

Yeah I'm getting confused just reading all of the many reviews! I've been looking for a good program to start up my social network on for some time now and I think this is the one. The only problem I have is I'm new to all the web design stuff so I dont want to get it if it's to hard to use!! Can anyone explain JomSocial and how it works with Joomla? Do you already have to have Joomla installed to use Jomsocial?
Many thanks,

Maybe it's just me but I can't get my head around Joomla.
I've tried setting up a demo site but I just can't make head or tail of it.
If I want to add my content I first have to "send a ticket" ?????
What the hell is "a ticket"?
OK. worked out what they mean, so go to send a ticket.
What shall I send?
"Dear sir please let me upload some stuff"??????
Are we back in grade school?
They go to all the trouble of giving me a site to try things on but then demand I ask permission to use it.

I think they need to get a "non geek" to write up a "Getting Going" manual.

Maybe it's a professional system but its documentation is like the proverbial mad woman's knitting.

But like I said, maybe it's just me.

If you're setting up a website with no understanding of security, permissions, or the difference in Joomla between components, modules, and plugins, perhaps you should hand the job over to someone who has taken the time to (D'oh!) edumacate themselves, because you won't have a hope in Hades.
