As is the trend of late, a large number of WCM vendors are bring their WCM product lines to the cloud in one way or the other and PaperThin is no exception. Today, they have announced the release of CommonSpot Cloud, a SaaS based version of their popular, award winning WCM platform.

“There is tremendous pressure on marketers now more than ever to deliver on the promise of the Web. Organizations want better results, faster. CommonSpot Cloud removes IT from the Web management equation so marketers can easily combine their creativity with our powerful content management capabilities for better results without encountering bottlenecks. They can be up and running and quickly creating the digital initiatives they want, and optimizing those campaigns in real time. That’s a powerful combination that brings marketers real business agility,” said Todd Peters, founder and president of PaperThin.

Key Benefits for Marketers:

High Impact Results
Marketers get the powerful capabilities they need to easily create well organized, SEO enabled, interactive, and community-focused websites that drive new business and strengthen online brands.

Multi-channel Optimization
Marketers can optimize digital content and campaigns across all Web channels, including social media, mobile, etc.

Fast Time to Market
Marketers can implement Web strategies in weeks not months with minimal effort using CommonSpot Cloud, and can start realizing marketing results immediately.

“We offer significant IT benefits as well,” Peters added. “CommonSpot Cloud lowers Web operating costs and administrative burdens, frees up IT resources, and improves reliability and scalability. This offering is perfect for those seeking leaner, cloud-based Web infrastructures. While we remain committed to our on premises, ColdFusion-based solution, we’ve added this new cloud-based option to round out our offering with choices that meet any organization’s needs regardless of size, budget, platform, or resources.”

Key Benefits for IT:

Lower Costs and Fewer Resources
CommonSpot Cloud offers affordable, tiered pricing so organizations only pay for the capabilities and infrastructure they need. Because it’s SaaS and in the cloud, capital expenses for software licenses and hardware are eliminated and ongoing maintenance, upgrade and support resources and associated costs are significantly reduced.

Rapid Deployment and Greater Productivity
CommonSpot Cloud sites can be implemented quickly by PaperThin experts and just as quickly handed off to business users greatly reducing your time to Web. By removing the time and resources associated with the initial build-out and ongoing maintenance, IT productivity greatly improves because time can be spent focusing on more strategic business initiatives.

CommonSpot Cloud is available on the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) at four basic price levels—Express, Standard, Professional, and Enterprise—but can be customized to each customer’s specific configuration. Customers will be able to leverage the benefits of cost, reliability, elasticity, and security for their Web infrastructure. PaperThin’s Professional Services team, along with its certified partners, will provide core implementation services for the initial site build out and training. All ongoing server and software maintenance tasks, upgrades, support, and performance monitoring will be handled by PaperThin, eliminating the need for specialized internal IT resources.

As VP of Research and Lead WCM Analyst at Gartner, Mick MacComascaigh knows more than a thing or two about enterprise web content management systems. In the recent podcast “The BIG Shift: Building a Global Online Strategy with Cloud WCM”, Mick talks about the challenges many organizations face in building a global web presence, in most cases with very limited and outdated legacy installed content management systems. The frustration generated from these challenges is what has been driving the attention of global enterprises towards software-as-a-service (SaaS) web content management, also known as Cloud web content management. As a much-improved alternative solution, Cloud WCM delivers on the failed promises of speed, agility, and interoperability once expected from on-premise content management systems.

Watch “The BIG Shift: Building a Global Online Strategy with Cloud WCM”

As the podcast explains, Cloud WCM provides tangible and quantifiable benefits such as 80% faster deployments than on-premise CMS at 70% total cost of ownership (TCO), no hardware or software to purchase hence significantly reducing capital expenditure, global accessibility, no technical requirements resulting in better usability for business units, and much more.

SubHub Lite is a new SaaS web CMS which launched on November 1st.

SubHub Lite is built on the latest release of Drupal 7, with a unique admin layer, site builder, design themes and apps (drag and drop functionality). As a hosted platform there’s nothing to download to upgrade.

SubHub Lite has been built around the concept of outstanding ease of use.

So many content management systems / platforms have been built with the assumption that their users will have a certain level of technical expertise. This ignores a lot of people who would like to build and manage their own website, but are clueless about how to install plugins and modules, add design themes and generally customize things.

SubHub Lite embraces any kind of user and make it as easy to set up and manage a website, even if you’re not particularly technically minded.

From an easy to use site builder, to the use of drag and drop apps and simple design tools, the SubHub team have tried to make their Lite platform as intuitive to use as possible.

Currently, users can add apps to their pages for YouTube, Twitter, Disqus, Flickr and MailChimp. Over the coming weeks and months they’ll be adding new apps on a continuous basis. These will include store apps, subscription apps, ad-serving apps, video CDN apps and a lot more besides.

SubHub Lite is currently completely free. In the coming months however optional premium apps will be made available through the SubHub Lite app store. The opportunity will also be made available for developers and designers to build their own apps and design themes, which they can either make available to users for free or at a charge.

Check it out at http://www.subhublite.com

In a market that sometimes seems to be over saturated with vendors vying for your dollar, it’s always interesting to see how the various vendors are changing to stay competitive. cmScribe has been around for a number of years but has recently “pulled the current software apart and rebuilt it on the latest versions of .NET and Ajax to specifically address web developers workflow and UI expectations.”

I was offered an opportunity recently to take a look at the new product and here are my thoughts.

cmScribe is a SaaS based content management system with what I would consider a very reasonable price point. Currently, their product is not available for commercial purchase but the tentative numbers are as follows:

Pricing subject to change. See http://www.cmscribe.com/about/pricing/ for current pricing.

There are quite a few options in the SaaS arena but not very many of them are priced as competitively as this one, in my opinion. I’m eager to see how widely adopted the system becomes once it’s officially released.

Please keep in mind that this review is based on an existing beta and, as such, there may be bugs or glitches that I identify. These may not necessarily still be present in the final product.

I was given a demo site to use for this review that was pre-populated with data. Once I logged in with the designer role, I was presented with the following screen:

You can see in the picture above that in the top left beside the logo for cmScribe there are three icons that look like this:

These are used to enter the various modes of page display. For instance, the left being edit mode, then manage mode and finally, live mode. The screenshot above shows edit mode. Clicking on any of the available green edit buttons brings up a simple ckEditor window for quick editing of content:

Editing the content is pretty straight forward and I experienced no issues using the editor. cmScribe uses Ajax to load the various options and I found load time to be very quick. There is also the ability to create a new page which is equally as quick.

The next mode, manage mode.

Once active, the toolbar at the top becomes active with the following functions:

It also presents a screen that looks like this:

In this mode, you have the ability to add panels to the various active areas, edit the ones that have something to change, manage the styles and edit the template. One of the things that might potentially confuse new users are the icons on the various areas. For instance, the move icon on the left (pictured below) led me to believe I had the ability to drag and drop the basic content within the various active regions.

This isn’t the case, however. You have to actually click on the icon to get the option to move it. This obviously isn’t a major issue but could certainly lead to confusion for new users. Hovering over this icon should probably present an info pop-up advising users how to use it, currently it states that you use it to move the panel but it doesn’t make it obvious that you need to click on it.

Clicking on Page Settings on the top bar gives a variety of options to configure on a per page basis:

You can also navigate to the various CMS settings using the drop down menu in the top right:

The majority of the options and their respective pages are pretty straight forward to I won’t focus too much on the obvious ones other than to say they load fast, work as intended and are easy to understand.

One of the options I found the most interesting is the Content Prototypes option. Clicking this one presents a page such as this:

This is a very easy to use way to build content templates which I found exceptionally well put together. Adding the various elements works with drag and drop and clicking on the names (when in blue) presents individual settings for said option. Example:

I have to say, this is one of the best setups I’ve seen for constructing content templates and it was pleasing and easy to use. I think cmScribe took one of the greatest frustrations new users have and made it simple. I’m duly impressed.

That’s it for Manage mode.

Live mode is simply a preview of how the site looks once you’ve completed your edits.

For those unsure how to use the system or who require additional assistance, cmScribe has also provided a number of videos that demonstrate how to go from html/css/javascript and graphical assets to a completed cmScribe website: http://www.cmscribe.com/support/Developer-Videos/97/

Conclusion

cmScribe has put together an excellently valued SaaS based CMS here. They’ve taken the most difficult portions of web development and made them as easy as possible and they have done so successfully.

We’ll have to wait to see how the final product looks but I have no problem recommending this system to anyone looking for an easy to use .NET system that is SaaS based (hosted).

Webiva, an open source Ruby on Rails content management system (CMS) designed to compete with the likes of Drupal, Joomla, and WordPress, today launched a new Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) hosting platform. Webiva.com allows web professionals to build websites on a load-balanced, backed-up and replicated cloud without the hassle of installing and maintaining a Ruby on Rails installation.

“Webiva has been absolutely critical to the growth of our business. We reviewed dozens of platforms to adopt, and have found nothing that compares in quality to Webiva,” said Jonathan Karush, CEO of Liberty Concepts, the nation’s largest provider of campaign websites to U.S. congressional candidates. “It has powered some of the nation’s most recognizable advocacy campaigns over the past two years.”

Built from the ground up with a designer’s and a developer’s needs in mind, Webiva is a web 2.0 open-source website building system (WBS) that allows web professionals to build custom websites that look and operate the way they want them to. Based on a Ruby on Rails framework from a software perspective, Webiva does its best to build on the concepts and methodologies that Rails creates. It has an extensible module system that allows additional functionality to easily be dropped into the system. Webiva offers support for forums, e-commerce, social networking other mediums needed by web professionals building top-of-the-line websites.

“Until recently there were two CMS options: a blog engine that’s user-friendly but limited, or a full-stack CMS that’s powerful, but complex to manage,” said Webiva Partner and Developer Pascal Rettig. “Webiva offers the best of both, a Rails-based system with the accessibility of a blog engine and all the features of a big CMS on the back-end.”

With 18 years of combined web development experience, Pascal and Martha Rettig are the inventive developer-designer team behind Webiva’s creation. They have been using the system for more than four years. Every feature available on Webiva was added in response to a specific requirement that arose during its use. Key benefits to web professionals using Webiva include:

Easy-to-Use – A user-friendly interface similar to a blog engine with all the features of a powerful open-source CMS

Non-CMS Aesthetic Appeal – Webiva is transparent from a site’s front end, giving designers full control and easy access to site HTML and CSS with built in editors.

Quick Click Site Creation – Build and deploy dozens of sites from a singe install- no need to FTP templates and assets.

Well documented, Open-source Platform – Built-on and extensible with Ruby on Rails, web professionals can use core modules (including e-commerce, social networking, forums, etc.) or write their own.

About Webiva

Webiva is the first and only web 2.0 open source Ruby on Rails content management system (CMS) built from the ground up with a designer’s and a developer’s needs in mind. Known as a website building system (WBS), Webiva allows web professionals to build custom websites that look and operate the way they want them to. Founded in 2006, Webiva is based in Boston. http://www.webiva.com/

KnowledgeTree has recently been making headlines here on CMS Critic with their recent shift to a SaaS based document management platform and we decided to take some time to find out the reasons for their move. In this interview with CEO, Daniel Chalef, we discuss the reasons behind the move to SaaS and his vision for the future of document management, among other topics of interest.

Enjoy…

CC: Can you give our readers a bit of a basic rundown as to how you came to be with KnowledgeTree and a bit about your background

Daniel Chalef CEO of KnowledgeTree

DC: Mike, the genesis of KnowledgeTree was a product developed for a South African customer by a South African systems integrator. At the time I was CTO of the SI and we decided to open source the results of the project.

We put the project up on to SourceForge.net and started seeing many thousands of downloads per month and we figured there was a business model to be had.

We subsequently started up a company in the US, of which I became the CEO, and redeveloped the software which is the incarnation of KnowledgeTree’s document management solution that is available online today.

CC: Interesting. Compared to competing DMS products, what do you think made KnowledgeTree peak the interest of potential customers/users?

DC: To business users:

simplicity

fast time to value (i.e. what equipment, people, configuration and customization, and training is required to start seeing value from the product)

affordability versus very expensive enterprise content management suites.

For technologists running KnowledgeTree on-premise:

The accessibility of KnowledgeTree’s code. Being written in PHP it is easy to modify and extend

The fact that KnowledgeTree is delivered as a service, a cloud offering, really assists both business users and technologists with seeing value very quickly

KnowledgeTree is designed to allow users to quickly start managing documents online, and to go beyond other basic content management services available today in in allowing users to manage their document lifecycle with tools such as workflow and contracts management features.

KnowledgeTree also has pretty neat integration with Microsoft Office applications, the desktop and even HTML5 drag and drop.

CC: Can you explain a bit further how your customers see benefit from moving to your platform now that it’s SaaS based? What is the primary difference to the end user between a SaaS cloud offering and a locally managed install, in your opinion?

DC: Document management as a Service provides the following benefits:

Customers don’t need to make capital expenditure on equipment and software;

The software can be implemented immediately, without requiring IT’s assistance, reducing IT’s workload and streamlining the purchasing process

their content is stored securely, with many vendors servicing customers out of datacenters that have undergone stringent physical and logical security certifications (such as SAS70 Type II certification) often this level of security is higher than their own infrastructure

coupled with security, DM as a service provides for very high availability and data integrity – again, the massive redundancy available on cloud infrastructure often far exceeds what a customer can economically implement themselves

In a mobile, or geographically dispersed workforce, a customer can ensure that all knowledge workers can access content from wherever they may be, without having to lay on additional network connectivity into their own datacenters.

Additionally, with software as a service, all upgrades and improvements are managed by the vendor, and this further reduces the burden on internal IT teams, and ensures that the customer is always running the latest, most capable and most secure product.

CC: Those are certainly compelling reasons. You mentioned the mobile workforce.. how well does KT integrate with the increasing number of mobile platforms on the market?

DC: Our web interface can be used from Webkit based phones (Android, iOS) and we have Android and iOS apps in the works.

CC: What is your vision for the next 5 years as to how people will be interacting with and manipulating their data? Do you see a change with regards to how it is being accessed? Do you anticipate more mobile applications coming into play? How is KnowledgeTree preparing itself for these shifts in the way content is managed?

DC: We will have greatly increased need to manage content. Currently, very few organizations are managing all sources of content – IM, social streams (whether generated internally, or on external social platforms), the majority of email etc are not currently managed, with adverse effects on an organization’s ability to manage risk.

This problem is only going to increase and often times, the burden of doing so is too large (expensive) to manage centrally. As a result, line of business managers are often bearing the costs, both in terms of risk and in terms of operating efficiency. The costs of managing this explosion of content have until now been very significant, primarily due to two factors: available software, and the model the software was taken to market.

The available software has been expensive, difficult to implement and difficult for the line of business to maintain. It’s required expensive consultants to configure, and often manage and the software was only available on-premise – with all the associated capital investment required in physical infrastructure.

Alongside the explosion of content, we’ve also seen the rise of cloud computing. Storage costs and computing costs have plummeted and software running on that cloud infrastructure has taken cues from consumer software:

It’s become accessible for business users, with easy to use interfaces, the removal of “tech” or “ECM industry” geek-speak.

It’s also mobile and accessible

So going forward, business users will grow ever more empowered to manage their own content, drive efficiency within their line of business, and manage risk.

Some very practical examples:

A CFO in a 200 person company no longer requires the implementation of an expensive on-premise ECM and document capture solution to manage the workflow around invoicing, purchase orders, and accounts payable.

Document management as a service offerings, such as KnowledgeTree, allows the CFO herself to build workflows, integrate on-premise scanners etc that support the above uses, all from a very accessible (as in easy to use, free of jargon) web UI.

You’ve got me started, but I can go on if you’d like ;) It’s a topic I quite enjoy.

CC: You recently wrote an article on the KnowledgeTree blog entitled “Is traditional software dead?” in which you pointed to some numbers by IDC that showed a steady decline in the licensed software model that most corporations have been tied to for years.

What methods are being employed by KnowledgeTree to assist these users with large time and customization investments in place with their current software to move to your platform?

DC: We are building technology that assists customers with migrating their content, and broader taxonomy (metadata, workflows, etc) from on-premise to the cloud.

We positively want to make it as smooth as possible for a customer to get from their existing legacy ECM app to KnowledgeTree in the cloud.

Already in place, we have technologies that assist organizations with putting large volumes of content in the cloud, either as the bare documents themselves, or with some migration development of XML files, the documents and their metadata.

So we have some tech already in place, and are building more to ensure a smooth migration.

CC: Has KnowledgeTree seen a growth in adoption due to this decline of late?

DC: Yes, we have seen strong interest from customer organizations for a SaaS / cloud solution and from surprising places that have validated our belief that mid-market organizations are very ready to see the benefits of SaaS. The sizes and types of organizations we are seeing certainly indicate the coming of age of SaaS.

CC: Do you feel that Knowledgetree has a leg up on it’s competitors when it comes to the migration to a SaaS based solution?

DC: Our Hot Folders technology, which is specifically designed to assist with this process has certainly been well received by our user community.

CC: Can you describe Hot Folders a bit for us?

DC: It monitors a folder for files or folders and releases them into the KnowledgeTree service. What’s cool about it is that it can work as simply as that, or you can train your scanner, fax server, or even other line of business apps such as accounting apps, to output an XML file alongside the document.

This file describes the document in more detail, perhaps providing a barcode, a customer number or similar. This metadata is then associated with the document in the KnowledgeTree repository. You can then report on documents added to the repsoitory, based on that metadata, using KnowledgeTree’s search engine or even kick off a workflow that manages the newly added documents through their lifecycle.

For example, newly scanned in invoices could go through an approval cycle before being paid.
This very same technology can be leveraged when migrating from a legacy on-premise ECM application to KnowledgeTree in the cloud. That is, your existing metadata can be migrated alongside the documents themselves.

CC: Thank you. Back in June, you mentioned an upcoming launch of Salesforce.com integration. When can users expect to see this and what other integrations are in the works, if any?

DC: We are able to right now provide it to customer organizations who’d like to try out the beta and will be publishing it on the AppExchange later this quarter.

We have a number of other line of business application integrations in our sights, and will be announcing these over the next few months. Our lightweight and easy to use REST interfaces do already provide a powerful mechanism for custom integration efforts that customers or partners would like to undertake.

CC: It sounds like KnowledgeTree is well positioned to be even more of a contender in the market. Where do you see the company in the next 5 years?

DC: Continuing to deliver great, innovative software that our customers enjoy using, and see significant value from, and with that, healthy growth that we and our investors can be proud of ;)

CC: Can you share with us whom some of your largest or more recognizable customers are?

This technology is used in browsers on both the iPhone and Android phones including the popular Motorola Droid.

To coincide with the availability of CrownPeak CMS on mobile devices, CrownPeak has launched a series of mobile templates to be used by their customers to create mobile versions of their sites. These templates will be provided, managed and supported by CrownPeak to enable every one of CrownPeak’s customers a feature-rich mobile site.

“We live in a world where there are already 450 million mobile internet users, soon to be a billion. Enabling our customers to use the CrownPeak products from their mobile devices has been a big project, and we’re thrilled to be the only CMS product on the market to have taken this step” said Jim Howard, CrownPeak’s CEO. “At the same time, our customers need their web sites and web marketing efforts to work for the mobile web, so we are adding a suite of powerful tools to our product to enable that as well.”
