In my previous post, Joomla showing heavy growth in 2011, I noted that Joomla has been growing like a crazy with huge adoption number since the release of 1.6.  Since then, it has reached 23.5 million downloads which is a crazy amount for a CMS and speaks volumes to it’s popularity. This isn’t the only milestone, however.

Joomla 1.6, for example has been downloaded over 1.7 million times since it’s release and has seen an incredible adoption rate.Currently there are over 2000 government sites worldwide that use Joomla  including NASA, the US Air Force and US Army.

The Joomla development team have also been working hard and have moved to a 6 month release cycle which means we can expect 1.7 to hit the shelves in around July of this year.

So far, 2011 is looking like a pretty darn good year for Joomla and we’re only halfway through.

I am not at all surprised at this number. We are having customers that switch their old custom build CMS out for Joomla and they are amazed at all the things that they can do now.
When it comes to security in Joomla, as Les seems to think is a problem with Joomla, then the problem is not Joomla itself, but unsafe usage of Joomla, such as keeping the default admin account active and having weak passwords that are the main problems. Another thing is that due to the popularity of Joomla more Joomla installations will be hacked than say Geeklog installations. It is like Windows vs Linux.

This is pretty good news for me. I get most of my business from customers with hacked Joomla sites. I put them on something more secure.
