I heard a lot about JomSocial. Are you planning to write about Joomla + Jomsocial combination for private social network? They just release 1.6 brillo version and it is very tempting but I think the price is quite steep to jump on their board. 
 
Hope you can give a preview and share you experience with them.

My test entailed basic strategies using the one directory.  With this basic setup, it worked great.  You might want to join the Elgg community and see what suggestions they might have.
